Thermatech® Solar Reflectance Technology Wins Commended At BPN Environ Sustainability Awards
03 November 2009
Thermatech® solar reflectance technology, the latest technological advancement from BlueScope Steel, won a Highly Commended award in the Innovation of the Year category at the 2009 BPN (Building Product News) Environ Sustainability Awards.
The annual awards recognise building professionals and manufacturers who promote sustainable building and design including the award for innovative design or services that are unique and provide for a more sustainable built environment.
BlueScope Steel's Thermatech® solar reflectance technology was awarded for the new level of improved thermal performance it gives to COLORBOND® steel.
All roofs made from COLORBOND® steel now incorporate new Thermatech® technology which works by reflecting more of the sun's heat, leaving the roof space and therefore the building and surrounding environment cooler.
In hot weather it can keep the building up to 1ºC to 5ºC cooler depending upon the level of insulation already installed, reducing the need for air conditioning.
As a result, seven colours in the COLORBOND® steel palette are now classified as light or very light under BASIX and the Building Code of Australia's colour classification and even darker colours perform better. This offers homeowners a greater choice of colours and in some parts of Australia, reduced need for the amount of insulation required to meet building regulations.
Brian Kelly, National Marketing Manager at BlueScope Steel, commented: "We are delighted that Thermatech® solar reflectance technology has been recognised as a commendable step forward in building sustainably.
"Thermatech® solar reflectance technology now incorporated in COLORBOND® steel roofing and walling, provides builders and specifiers with an appropriate building material to help fulfil their design briefs, offering greater design and colour choice, whilst assisting to achieve their sustainability objectives".
