Judges of the HIA COLORBOND® steel Australian Most Innovative Use of Steel award 2008 said "steel was the only material that could have met the winning project's objectives of being open plan with uninterrupted views from all angles".
Tasmanian company Cordwell Lane Pty Ltd with Elvio Brianese Design Inc created a building that emulates the look of 'cupped hands'. Steel made it possible to achieve the necessary span and to create the twisted shapes which reflect the design concept. Corrugated cladding made from COLORBOND® steel was also used for durability, cost efficiency and ease of maintenance.
Scott Cordwell from Cordwell Lane said:
"The contemporary building uses a steeply pitched roof to link with surrounding building heights. Rising to frame the mountain views from the inside, the white COLORBOND® steel roof draws the colour out from the surrounding gum trees".
Long used for its style and durability, frames made from TRUECORE® steel and roofing and walling made from COLORBOND® steel are increasingly being used by builders and architects to create depth, texture and a contemporary feel.
The HIA COLORBOND® steel Australian Most Innovative Use of Steel award recognises the ground breaking ideas and unique designs being created in the building industry as a result of steel's flexibility and ease of use.
The 2008 HIA COLORBOND® steel Australian Most Innovative Use of Steel award was selected from the 2007 regional winners of the same category.
