This award winning residence won four categories at the 2009 BDAQ Sunshine Coast Region Awards, including the 'Best Use of COLORBOND® steel', and a further three prizes in the BDAQ State Awards 2009.
The striking contemporary home was designed to have a Japanese/Asian resort persona that draws the relaxing water views in through the house. A striking street appeal, resort style pool and no real boundary between indoors and out were part of the client's requirements. The brief stipulated a need for space yet a comfortable feel that wasn't precious. Most importantly, of all a sense of peace from the outside world with street and near neighbour privacy.
This family home has four self contained bedrooms, each with its own unique character and en-suite, plus a guest suite on the ground level that shares a powder room. The home includes an open plan kitchen, dining and living room, a family room separate to the living space that opens to the pool, a media games room, laundry, study and a double garage.
This waterside home boasts Chris' unique interpretation of Japanese design including Asian-inspired pavilions that create striking roof lines throughout. A floating timber boardwalk is suspended over the large pool which dominates the outdoor space and a porthole and bridge give the upper level of the home a nautical theme. To take advantage of the winter sunshine the residence opens to the north and enables the family to enjoy the open indoor/outdoor living that the home offers. Chris' attention to detail is captured in the French-polished cabinetry and custom guttering made from COLORBOND® steel that was created especially to suit the home.
Chris says: "I chose roofing made from COLORBOND® steel because it was the perfect solution for the Queensland climate and for the clean sharp lines my design needed. I wanted the roof to be striking and eye catching but also to be as one with the custom made guttering. The guttering itself is flared and appears to be flat, meeting a modern interpretation of the Japanese style desired, while at the same time providing a gutter that can cope with Queensland's serious downpours."
Saltwater House meets BCA ratings by employing a wide range of aspects, energy efficient lighting, good water management systems plus the home displays great thermal performance, working effectively without air-conditioning in the hot summer months through cross ventilation. Furthermore, the design utilises recyclable materials such as custom guttering made from COLORBOND® steel and roofing made from COLORBOND® steel in the profile LYSAGHT CUSTOM ORB® and the colour Jasper®.
