Australia's greenest homes will open their doors to the public for the ninth annual Sustainable House Day on Sunday 12 September.
The homes are a showcase of the country's most environmentally sustainable and innovative homes that invest in renewable energy, recycling and other practices designed to reduce their carbon footprint.
"More and more savvy homeowners are realising the benefits of investing in sustainable living technology in their homes which not only presents energy savings but financial savings too," event organiser Judy Celmins says.
Sustainable House Day, a free event presented by Solar Shop Australia and sponsored by BlueScope Steel, provides a unique opportunity for people to meet with home owners who have 'been there, done that' and are on hand to provide unbiased advice about their own personal experience.
BlueScope Steel is a major sponsor of the event for the second year running. In response to the growing need for sustainable design, BlueScope Steel has invested in new technologies, such as Thermatech® paint technology, which gives a new level of improved thermal performance to roofing made from COLORBOND® steel.
All roofs made from COLORBOND® steel now incorporate new Thermatech® technology which works by reflecting more of the sun's heat - leaving the roof space and therefore the building cooler. In hot weather it can keep un-insulated buildings an average of about 5ºC cooler.
A range of purpose built sustainable display homes and private homes featuring a variety of sustainable features and ideas will open for the 2010 Sustainable House Day. The houses will give visitors opportunities to see firsthand the benefits such as solar, ventilation, water harvesting and recycling, shading, thermal mass (materials that absorb and release heat), glazing and window treatments. Architects and builders will also be on hand at many of the homes to provide expert tips.
