Location: Subiaco, Western Australia
Country: Australia
Awards: 2008 BDAA Design Award in the multi-residential – semi detached/duplex or small lot category
Situated amongst the greenery of newly reborn Subiaco in Western Australia, the Martin residence is a three level split house on a small lot nestled in the "Subi Centro" district of Subiaco, which is rejuvenated industrial land located five minutes from Perth Central Business District. The Martin residence is a design accomplishment for Jason Saunders' Arc Seven.1, winning them a 2008 BDAA Design Award in the multi-residential, semi detached/duplex or small lot category.
The client brief was for a house that was primarily going to be a home for settling down but also an entertainer's home that had defined zones over three levels. The clients wanted to have an area that was to be a couples 'retreat', an area that was segregated from the rest of the house that could be exclusively for them. Separate internal and external spaces open up to form larger rooms, which has balanced the need to create intimate spaces, both publicly and privately within the home.
Designer, Jason Saunders explained how clients with specific ideas make his job a lot easier: "With the Martin residence, one of the key factors in its success comes down to how easy my clients were to work with. They knew what they wanted but were really open to ideas. Flexibility is the key when it comes to design, and in this case I couldn't have had better clients," said Jason.
The Martins were looking for a place that they could call ‘forever', this house being their final home. They drew inspiration for the concept from Balinese holiday villas for which they frequented during their trips to Bali. Jason adds: "Balinese villas have a real openness and serenity about them and my clients had fallen in love with some of the designs of the villas they stayed in and wanted to recreate their own version at home."
The level of finishing and detail that has been put into the home makes the Martin residence a breath of fresh air for Subiaco, keeping the older style charm of the area and combining it with a more modern interpretation, complimented by the Balinese inspirations. Jason's selection of materials aesthetically and environmentally compliment the rejuvenated area, further demonstrating his commitment to assuring that the home fits in with both the clients brief and the sought after Subi Centro area.
Roofing made from COLORBOND® steel in Dune® shines in the West Australian sun and aids the aesthetically pleasing exterior, helping create texture and a contemporary feel. Guttering that is made from COLORBOND® steel in Dune complements the roofing, and gives the outer appearance a fresh and sleek finish. "I chose COLORBOND® because it's a reliable and product. It is sturdy and looks great, and is the only building material I would use to protect houses against the harsh Australian conditions," added Jason.
The property boasts a generous living space that maximises the smaller sized 180 square metre block. The design promoting the natural light with the walls facing to the north to capture the sun's natural heating properties. The house is not only thermally efficient but the area is totally light filled and spaciously comfortable. Part of what makes the Martin Residence so appealing, is the integration the building has with its surrounding environment. The modern design integrates with the rejuvenated surroundings. The design offers comfortable living in an inner city terraced style dwelling.
